iPhone 5c: Apple’s Most Playful iPhone Yet — But Is It Just a Repackaged 5?

When Apple took the stage on September 10, 2013, there were already rumors swirling about not one, but two iPhones being launched. It turns out, the rumors were spot-on: Apple introduced the premium iPhone 5s and the colorful, more “affordable” iPhone 5c.

Now that the iPhone 5c is officially out in the wild, let’s take a closer look at what this device really is, who it’s for, and whether it lives up to the hype, or the expectations we’ve come to associate with Apple.

A Splash of Color from Cupertino

The biggest, boldest difference the iPhone 5c brings to the table is something no iPhone before it dared to do: color.

While every iPhone since the original in 2007 has stuck to monochrome palettes (black, white, and more recently, a bit of silver), the 5c comes in five vibrant colors: blue, green, pink, yellow, and white. It’s like Apple reached into a bag of Skittles and decided to build phones based on them.

It’s not just the color that’s different, but the material too. The iPhone 5c features a polycarbonate (plastic) shell, reinforced with a steel frame inside for rigidity. The result is a phone that feels solid and dense, not cheap like the word “plastic” might suggest. It doesn’t creak or flex, and the glossy finish gives it a smooth, polished feel.

In fact, in the hand, it feels almost like a high-end Lumia phone,  which isn’t a bad thing.

Familiar Tech in a New Body

Let’s get this out of the way: The iPhone 5c is essentially an iPhone 5 inside a new case.

It’s powered by the same A6 chip, comes with the same 4-inch Retina display (1136 x 640 pixels), the same 8MP rear camera, and same battery life. From a technical standpoint, nothing has improved, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The iPhone 5 was (and still is) a very capable phone. It runs iOS 7 buttery smooth, launches apps quickly, and handles games and multitasking like a champ. The A6 chip may not be the shiny new A7 that the 5s gets, but it’s still fast for most users.

iPhone 5c Specs at a Glance:

  • Display: 4-inch Retina (1136×640)
  • Processor: Apple A6
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Rear Camera: 8MP iSight
  • Front Camera: 1.2MP FaceTime HD
  • Storage: 16GB or 32GB
  • Colors: Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow, White
  • Body: Polycarbonate plastic with steel frame
  • Battery: Similar to iPhone 5 (~10 hours talk time)

Pricing: “Affordable” by Apple’s Standards

One of the most anticipated aspects of the 5c was its price. Many hoped this would be Apple’s answer to mid-range Android phones and a way to gain market share in emerging economies like India and China.

But Apple being Apple, the term “budget” is relative.

  • iPhone 5c (16GB): $99 on a 2-year contract
  • iPhone 5c (32GB): $199 on a 2-year contract
  • Unlocked: $549 (16GB) / $649 (32GB)

So no, it’s not cheap. It’s just cheaper than the flagship iPhone 5s, which starts at $199 on contract ($649 unlocked).

If you were expecting a $300 off-contract iPhone, this isn’t it.

iOS 7: A New Look for a New Phone

The iPhone 5c ships with iOS 7 pre-installed, and honestly, it’s a perfect match. Jony Ive’s bold, colorful new interface mirrors the bright hues of the 5c’s exterior. The flat design, translucent layers, and pastel color palette make this phone feel like iOS 7 was made just for it.

This isn’t just a software update; it’s a complete reimagining of what iOS looks like. And while the visuals are polarizing for some longtime Apple users, the performance on the 5c is smooth and responsive.

Camera: Same Sharp Shooter as the iPhone 5

The iPhone 5c sports the same 8MP rear camera as the iPhone 5, with a five-element lens and f/2.4 aperture. It may not match the fancy new dual-flash and larger sensor on the 5s, but it still takes great photos, especially in daylight.

Low-light performance is decent, but nothing groundbreaking. For casual users, though, the camera is more than capable, quick to launch, easy to use, and dependable.

Video is recorded at 1080p, and the FaceTime HD front camera is a step up from earlier iPhones for video calls and selfies.

The Case Controversy

Apple also released custom silicone cases for the 5c that expose the back color through circular cut-outs. While the idea is to mix and match colors in a fun, playful way, the execution has been… mixed.

For one, the holes align awkwardly with the word “iPhone” on the back, often showing “hon” peeking through. It’s a rare design misstep from a company known for perfectionism.

Still, some users might enjoy the customization aspect. And the cases do feel soft and well-made.

Who is the iPhone 5c For?

This is the real question. The iPhone 5c seems to target a slightly younger, more style-conscious audience, teens, students, or anyone who cares more about aesthetics and color than having the absolute latest specs.

It’s not for hardcore techies who crave bleeding-edge performance, that’s what the iPhone 5s is for.

Instead, the 5c is about personality, accessibility, and fun, all things Apple has traditionally approached with a much more serious tone.

The bright colors also make it easier to spot in a bag or distinguish from a sea of black-slab smartphones. In some ways, it brings a touch of the original iMac G3 philosophy to the modern smartphone era: tech that’s friendly, approachable, and not afraid to show a little flair.

Final Verdict: A Smart Move, If Not a Game-Changer

The iPhone 5c is not revolutionary, not in terms of hardware, innovation, or pricing. It’s a repurposed iPhone 5 in a new, colorful shell. But it’s also a strategic move by Apple.

By rebranding last year’s hardware and giving it a fresh look, Apple keeps the production costs low while widening its audience. It may not be the budget phone some wanted, but it fills a gap between the free-on-contract iPhone 4s and the top-tier 5s.

For most users, especially those upgrading from older iPhones like the 4 or 4s, the 5c is a fun, capable, and stylish option. It’s not the most exciting iPhone, but it’s perhaps the most personable one Apple has made.
