Samsung Galaxy A20e Review (2019): Compact, Stylish, and Surprisingly Capable

In 2019, Samsung completely refreshed its Galaxy A lineup with modern designs, better cameras, and improved battery life. Among the new entries was the compact yet stylish Samsung Galaxy A20e, a smaller alternative to the larger Galaxy A20 aimed at users who wanted a comfortable one-hand smartphone experience without sacrificing essential features. At a time when most smartphones were becoming larger and heavier, the Galaxy A20e stood out by offering a practical size, slim body, dual cameras, and fast charging, all at a budget-friendly price. Samsung clearly designed this device for students, casual users, and anyone who preferred portability over oversized displays. The Galaxy A20e may not have been the most powerful phone of 2019, but it managed to deliver a balanced smartphone experience with a premium look and dependable performance.

The phone was announced in April 2019 and released shortly after.

Design and Build Quality

One of the biggest highlights of the Galaxy A20e is its compact design. While Samsung was releasing bigger phones with 6.4-inch and 6.7-inch displays, the A20e kept things smaller with a 5.8-inch screen that fit comfortably in the hand. The device features a plastic body with curved edges and a glossy finish that gives it a more premium appearance than its price suggests. At just 141 grams, it feels lightweight and easy to carry around all day. Compared to the larger Samsung Galaxy A20, the A20e feels significantly more compact and manageable. The standard Galaxy A20 comes with a larger 6.4-inch display and a slightly bulkier frame, making the A20e the better option for users who prioritize portability and one-handed use. However, Samsung made a few compromises to keep the A20e affordable. Unlike the Galaxy A20’s Super AMOLED display, the A20e uses a TFT panel. The phone also lacks glass protection and water resistance, which was expected in this price segment. Still, the Infinity-V notch design gives the front of the phone a modern appearance that looked trendy in 2019.

Display Experience

The Galaxy A20e features a 5.8-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 720 x 1560 pixels. Although it does not use Samsung’s famous AMOLED technology, the TFT display still performs decently for everyday tasks. Colors are reasonably vibrant, viewing angles are acceptable, and brightness levels are good enough for indoor usage. Watching YouTube videos, browsing social media, and reading articles feels comfortable on the device. The smaller display size also means users can easily reach every corner of the screen with one hand. The downside is that blacks are not as deep as AMOLED panels, and outdoor visibility under direct sunlight could sometimes be challenging. Still, for its budget category, the display performs well enough.

Performance and Software

Under the hood, the Galaxy A20e runs on Samsung’s Exynos 7884 octa-core processor paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. In daily usage, the phone handles basic activities smoothly:
  • WhatsApp messaging
  • Facebook browsing
  • Instagram scrolling
  • YouTube streaming
  • Light gaming
  • Web browsing
Samsung’s One UI software also helps the experience feel cleaner and more user-friendly. The interface was designed with one-handed navigation in mind, which fits perfectly with the compact size of the A20e. Apps open reasonably fast, multitasking is manageable, and the software feels more polished than many competing budget phones released in 2019. However, the phone struggles with demanding games and heavy multitasking. Users who frequently play graphics-intensive titles may notice lag or frame drops. Some Reddit users praised the phone’s lightweight design and decent day-to-day usability, especially considering its affordable pricing.

Camera Performance

Samsung equipped the Galaxy A20e with a dual-camera setup:
  • 13MP main sensor
  • 5MP ultra-wide sensor
On the front, there is an 8MP selfie camera. The primary camera captures decent photos in good lighting conditions. Colors appear natural, details are acceptable, and Samsung’s image processing helps photos look social-media ready. The ultra-wide lens is one of the standout features at this price point. It allows users to capture landscapes, group shots, and wider scenes without stepping backward. Selfies from the 8MP camera are good enough for Instagram and video calls, though low-light performance is average. Video recording maxes out at 1080p, which was standard for budget phones in 2019. The cameras are not flagship-level, but they are more than capable for casual photography.

Battery Life and Charging

The Galaxy A20e packs a 3000mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging. While 3000mAh may sound small compared to larger smartphones, the compact HD+ display helps the phone achieve respectable battery life. Most users can comfortably get through a full day with moderate usage that includes:
  • Social media
  • Messaging
  • YouTube streaming
  • Calls
  • Music playback
Fast charging support was also impressive at this price range in 2019. The included 15W charger significantly reduced charging times compared to older Samsung budget devices.

Storage and Connectivity

The Galaxy A20e comes with 32GB internal storage, which can be expanded up to 512GB using a microSD card. Other notable features include:
  • Dual SIM support
  • USB Type-C port
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • NFC support in selected regions
  • Rear fingerprint sensor
The inclusion of USB Type-C and fast charging made the phone feel more modern than many competing devices in the same category.

While many brands focused entirely on making bigger phones, Samsung gave users a practical alternative with the A20e. Its lightweight body, decent cameras, fast charging support, and smooth software experience made it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. The phone was especially appealing to students, first-time smartphone users, and anyone who preferred smaller devices without giving up modern smartphone features. Although it lacked the AMOLED display and larger battery found on the regular Galaxy A20, the A20e compensated with portability and comfort. For users who valued compactness over screen size, the Galaxy A20e was one of the better small Android phones available in its class during 2019.
