Samsung Galaxy A53 5G Review: Samsung’s Mid-Range King Gets Better

The smartphone market in 2022 is more competitive than ever, especially in the mid-range segment. Brands are pushing powerful processors, better cameras, smoother displays, and premium designs into phones that no longer cost flagship money. Samsung has been dominating this category with its Galaxy A-series lineup, and now the company is back with another strong contender, the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. Coming as the successor to the popular Samsung Galaxy A52, the Galaxy A53 5G arrives with a refreshed design, a more efficient processor, a larger battery, and Samsung’s promise of long-term software support. But does it truly improve on its predecessor, or is it just another yearly refresh? After spending time with the Galaxy A53 5G, it’s easy to see why Samsung believes this could become one of the best-selling Android phones of 2022.

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G Release Date and Price

Samsung officially announced the Galaxy A53 5G in March 2022, and the device quickly became one of the most talked-about mid-range smartphones of the year. The phone launched globally with a starting price of around $449. Here’s what the launch pricing looked like in different currencies during its release year:
Currency Launch Price
US Dollar $449
Nigerian Naira ₦186,000 – ₦210,000
British Pounds £399
Indian Rupee ₹34,499
The pricing placed the Galaxy A53 5G directly against devices like the Pixel 6a, Redmi Note series, and OnePlus Nord lineup.

Design and Build Quality

At first glance, the Galaxy A53 5G looks very similar to the Galaxy A52, and honestly, that’s not a bad thing. Samsung clearly chose refinement over reinvention. The phone features a smooth matte plastic back with a seamless camera bump that blends naturally into the rear panel. It feels clean, modern, and surprisingly premium for a mid-range device. Samsung also made the phone slimmer and lighter in the hand despite packing a bigger battery inside. Compared to the Galaxy A52, the A53 feels slightly more polished. The camera housing flows more naturally into the body, and the overall finish looks cleaner. However, Samsung removed the 3.5mm headphone jack this time around, which disappointed many long-time Galaxy A-series fans. The device comes with IP67 water and dust resistance, something still rare in the mid-range segment. That means the phone can survive accidental splashes and brief water exposure without problems. Available colors include:
  • Awesome Black
  • Awesome White
  • Awesome Blue
  • Awesome Peach
The matte finish also helps reduce fingerprints compared to glossy phones, making it easier to keep clean during daily use.

Display: Smooth and Gorgeous

Samsung rarely disappoints with displays, and the Galaxy A53 5G continues that tradition beautifully. The phone features a 6.5-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. That means:
  • Deep blacks
  • Vibrant colors
  • Smooth scrolling
  • Excellent brightness
  • Great outdoor visibility
Watching YouTube videos, scrolling through Instagram, or gaming feels incredibly smooth thanks to the 120Hz panel. Samsung also improved brightness levels, making the display easier to use outdoors under direct sunlight. For a mid-range phone in 2022, this is one of the best displays available.

Performance and Hardware

The Galaxy A53 5G is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 1280 processor paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. In day-to-day usage, performance is generally smooth. Apps open quickly, multitasking works well, and the phone handles social media, streaming, browsing, and casual gaming comfortably. Games like:
  • PUBG Mobile
  • Call of Duty Mobile
  • Asphalt 9
run decently on medium to high settings. However, when compared directly with the Snapdragon-powered Galaxy A52s, some users noticed that the Exynos chipset isn’t always as powerful under heavy gaming loads. Reddit users and reviewers mentioned occasional lag and slower graphics performance during demanding tasks. Still, for the average user, the Galaxy A53 5G performs more than well enough.

Software Experience

One of the strongest reasons to buy the Galaxy A53 5G is Samsung’s software commitment. The phone launched with Android 12 and One UI 4.1, but Samsung promised up to four Android OS updates and five years of security patches. That level of support was almost unheard of for mid-range Android phones in 2022. Samsung’s One UI also remains one of the cleanest and most feature-packed Android skins available. You get:
  • Dark Mode
  • Samsung Knox security
  • Edge Panels
  • Custom themes
  • Secure Folder
  • Excellent multitasking tools
The software feels polished and beginner-friendly without losing advanced customization features.

Camera Performance

The Galaxy A53 5G features a quad-camera setup consisting of:
  • 64MP main camera
  • 12MP ultrawide camera
  • 5MP macro camera
  • 5MP depth sensor
On the front, you get a 32MP selfie camera. Daylight Photography In good lighting, the main camera performs excellently. Photos come out sharp, colorful, and detailed with Samsung’s signature vibrant style. The ultrawide camera is also impressive for landscape photography and group shots. Samsung’s image processing adds extra brightness and punchiness to photos, which many users enjoy for social media uploads. Night Photography Night photography is decent but not class-leading. The phone captures acceptable low-light images, though some noise and softness can appear in darker scenes. Video Recording The Galaxy A53 5G supports 4K video recording, and stabilization works fairly well during handheld shooting. For TikTok creators, Instagram users, and casual content creators, the camera system is more than capable.

Battery Life

Battery life is one of the biggest highlights of the Galaxy A53 5G. Samsung included a large 5000mAh battery, which comfortably lasts a full day and often stretches into a second day with moderate usage. Activities like:
  • Streaming videos
  • Browsing social media
  • Gaming
  • Video calls
barely drain the battery aggressively. The phone supports 25W fast charging, though Samsung no longer includes a charger inside the box. That decision received mixed reactions from users.

Connectivity and Extra Features

The Galaxy A53 5G includes:
  • 5G connectivity
  • Wi-Fi 5
  • Bluetooth 5.1
  • NFC
  • USB Type-C
  • Expandable storage via microSD
Samsung also retained the under-display fingerprint scanner, which works reliably most of the time. Stereo speakers provide loud and clear audio, making movies and gaming more enjoyable.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Excellent Super AMOLED 120Hz display
  • Premium-looking design
  • IP67 water resistance
  • Reliable all-day battery life
  • Strong software support
  • Good cameras for the price
  • Expandable storage support
  • Smooth One UI experience
Cons
  • No headphone jack
  • Charger not included in the box
  • Exynos processor struggles slightly during heavy gaming
  • Plastic build may not feel premium to everyone
  • Night photography could be better

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G vs Samsung Galaxy A52

The Galaxy A53 5G is more of an evolution than a revolution. Compared to the Galaxy A52:
Feature Galaxy A52 Galaxy A53 5G
Design Glossy/plastic finish Cleaner matte finish
Processor Snapdragon chipset Exynos 1280
Battery 4500mAh 5000mAh
Software Support Good Much longer support
Headphone Jack Yes No
Display 120Hz AMOLED Improved 120Hz AMOLED
The Galaxy A53 improves battery life and software longevity while refining the overall design. However, some users still preferred the Snapdragon chipset and headphone jack found on the A52 series.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy A53 5G proves that you don’t need to spend flagship money to get a premium smartphone experience. It delivers:
  • A fantastic AMOLED display
  • Long battery life
  • Reliable cameras
  • Water resistance
  • Excellent software support
  • Modern design
While it isn’t perfect, especially regarding gaming performance and the missing headphone jack, the overall package remains incredibly strong for the price. For students, casual users, content creators, and everyday smartphone users in 2022, the Galaxy A53 5G stands out as one of the safest and smartest Android phone purchases available. Samsung didn’t completely reinvent the Galaxy A-series here, they simply made an already successful formula even better.
